ESAF implemented a pilot project
in the year 2016 on prevention of non-communicable diseases by capacitating community health
workers (Arogyamitras) in Thrissur and Palakkad districts of Kerala. Women from ESAF SHGs
were chosen to become the Arogyamitras for the project, and they were trained to deliver
health education programmes to prevent NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and
mental illness. After the completion of training, the Arogyamitras facilitated health
lessons to SHG members.
Key results & Impacts:
- 650 students were directly benefited.
- Completed 1136 house visits. 34 people with mental issues were identified and 19 were referred to mental health services.
- More than 100 women participated in the camp and 95 women underwent cancer screening
- More than 100 SHG members attended the Cancer Day observance
Arogyamitra health workers covered 188 SHGs and 1586 clients through group sensitisation meetings
